Academic Essay

Banner advertising has become one of the most popular forms of advertising after wild spread of the internet all over the world. Banner (graphic image) and link are displayed on a high traffic web site, in which the people visiting that site see when the page loads. This banner commonly advertises a product, service, or another web site. It can also be used to show someone's point of view on a certain topic (for example, a presidential election). (Kristula, 1996) Every company in the world knows that if they want to spread the brand of company as fast as possible, internet is the right avenue. It is extremely fast, easy to spread and even though it may also be expensive, the expense is well worth it in the long run. Even though banner advertising has it is positives, it also has it is drawbacks. Advertising companies love this form of advertising but sometimes consumers dislike it very much. The image of the bright, moving, changing color picture, popping out right after clicking on some specific webpage can make us go crazy. Why should we be informed about specific products or prices of it if we are not interested in it? If people really want to know all this information they could just simply visit the specific webpage, so why are companies doing it? The answer is simple, each advertising company usually employs a marketing team whose sole purpose is to find out everything about customers psychology. When people work with the internet every day, they might have the feeling that the banners are for no purpose at all, but in fact these marketing teams know better. They know exactly how to attract customers for their product and or service. Humans are subconsciously registering each advertisement which appears on the screen of the computer. It does not matter if we are reading important information for the work or chatting on Facebook, our mind is able to register both. Thinking deeper about such kind of advertising we get into conflict with moral and ethical value as well. Is it not unethical for the companies to push all the products and services basically straight to our face. We as customers do not have an option on whether or not there will be advertisements, which means even if we do not want; we will come into contact with it. Advertisers could argue that this is their job, which is true; but is it not a bit different to get into contact with advertisement on the streets such as billboards or huge advertising screens, than be bombarded with advertisements through your computer screen while checking your emails or other important stuff on the internet?
On the other side, people have to think about the fact that if there were no banner advertising, many internet webpages or social networks would not make money. Facebook for example is used by millions people all over the world every day. Have you ever thought about the fact that we could be actually asked to pay for it or how does the whole social network work when it comes to money? Facebook as well as each other social network is full of side banner advertising. There are different types of banners used according to different target audience. Two major types of banners are static banners and dynamically-rotated banners. Static Banners do not change, they stay the same to every user, every page load. Dynamically-Rotated Banners can change for each user. A dynamically-rotated banner is usually a more effective way of advertising, but it requires a program to work. ). (Kristula, 1996)  With dynamic-rotation, you are able to advertise a different banner to each viewer, therefore you are able to have multiple advertisers, or, multiple banners for one advertiser, or any combination. With a static banner, you can only have a single banner, and only single advertisers for that page. (Ezilon 2008)
To conclude, even though people do not like banner advertising in general, internet is overwhelmed with them in order to earn money, and advertise products or services. People in general do not prefer seeing them while working or checking their emails because they might feel followed by advertisers nonstop even in their private life. However, we are able to find a lot of information which we can use even without looking for it. This would mean that banners have advantages as well; people just do not like the fact of seeing them everywhere all the time. It makes us feel uncomfortable, nervous or even angry.

  1. Meggie, good topic to talk about. I do agree with your statement that people do not like those banner surrounding them and they feel uncomfortable. However, there are some advantages though. I do admit that, we do not like them, but can me imagine our lives without them? Surely, not! This banner in some cases helps us to find out something new and might even useful such as jobs we are looking or places we want to go. I think for each advertising there is the one who is gonna be attracted. Additionally, advertisings doing their job for what they are payed by people who are also part of our society.
